Looking back at my rugby career and all that I was able to achieve fills me with immense pride. It was undoubtedly down to perseverance, determination and self-belief that I found success on the pitch, and could push beyond the setbacks along the way. Pulling on that England shirt is incredibly special feeling, and I was exceedingly fortunate to stand beside warriors of the game throughout my career.
To be a part of the 2003 team that lifted the greatest prize in rugby once seemed an unfathomable dream to me – and, on a personal note, to do it as leading try scorer for the tournament was the icing on the cake! That side was a perfect example of the attention to detail, fighting spirit, desire, trust and teamwork needed for victory. Unbelievable memories with incredible sportsmen, and wonderful people.
Life after retirement has been a lot of fun! Career changes are never an easy challenge, but I feel so privileged to be working as a TV analyst for the game I love. The jump back into business came its own challenges too, of course, but I was always willing to face whatever stood in my way head on! As a public speaker, as well as patron of Borne and Child Bereavement UK I feel honoured to be able to both inspire people to conquer their own tests, and support charities very close to my heart.
